Pinpoint: Tips for Finding Cities on a Map
Pinpoint gives you a city name and a blank world map. You drop a pin and are scored by how many kilometres away it is. A few reference lines make you much more accurate.
Use the big reference lines
- The Equator passes through Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, the Maldives, Indonesia and Kiribati, among others.
- The Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) passes through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana.
- The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn sit about 23.5 degrees north and south of the Equator.
Think coast first
Most big cities are within a short distance of a coast or a major river. If you know a city is a port, find the coastline first and then slide along it. Inland, think about neighbouring countries and the nearest major city you do know.
Zoom for precision
The world map starts fully zoomed out, where one pixel can cover many kilometres. Use the plus button or scroll to zoom before you lock in. Drag to move the map.
The rating
You are rated 1 to 10 by distance. On Medium, 50 km earns a 10 and 4,000 km earns a 2. On Easy the thresholds are twice as generous and on Hard they are 40 percent tighter.
Difficulty
Easy shows country borders. Medium shows coastlines only. Hard shows only faint outlines.
Very small countries
Some rounds ask for a tiny country like Monaco or Nauru. Think about the region first, then zoom in. Even a few hundred kilometres off can still score well.
Frequently asked questions
