World Capitals Quiz

Name a capital, find its country. Five new capitals every day at three difficulty levels.

Learn the world capitals by location

Learning capitals from a list is hard, because a list does not tell you where anything is. This quiz works the other way round. A capital is named on a postcard, and you tap the country it belongs to on the world map. After a few rounds you start to link each capital with a position on the map, and that is what makes it stick.

Scoring and tries

You are rated out of ten on each capital. On Easy and Medium you have three tries, worth ten, six and three points. On Hard you have two tries, worth ten or five. A daily quiz has five capitals, so the top score is fifty. Unlimited mode is survival: keep placing capitals until you miss one.

A study plan that works

  1. Pick one continent and read its capitals on the capital cities page.
  2. Play Easy, which zooms to the right region and uses well known countries.
  3. Move to Medium, where the whole world is shown, once you are scoring 40 or more.
  4. Finish with Hard, where only faint outlines are drawn.

Capitals that catch people out

Some answers are surprising: Bern is the Swiss capital, not Zurich or Geneva, Rabat is the capital of Morocco, not Casablanca, and Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, not Auckland. Several countries have more than one capital, so the game uses the commonly listed administrative capital.

Frequently asked questions

What is the capital of Australia?

Canberra. Sydney and Melbourne are larger, which is why it is a common wrong answer.

Does the quiz cover every capital in the world?

It covers more than 150 capitals on Medium and Hard. A few countries are left out where the capital is disputed.

Do I have to type any answers?

No. You tap the country on the map.

Is there a timer?

No. You can take as long as you like.

Can I use it for school revision?

Yes. The daily puzzle is short, and unlimited mode lets you practise as long as you want. Pair it with the capital cities list.

Are the questions the same for everyone?

Yes. The daily capitals are chosen from the date, so friends can compare scores.
